Course Description

Physics 231C is an online, algebra-based general physics class, recommended for a variety of majors. Topics include: kinematics, Newton's laws of motion, momentum and energy conservation, circular motion, gravitation, rotational motion, thermodynamics, oscillations, waves, sound.

Prerequisites

MTH 103 or MTH 116 or MTH 124 or MTH 132 or LBS 117.

Class Hours

PHY 231C, sec 730 and 731 (online sections): there are no lectures.

Helproom Hours

BPS 1248, Strosacker Learning Center: Mo/Tu/We/Th from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Fr from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Teaching Assistants: Ding Wang (wangdin1@msu.edu), Xu Lu (luxu@msu.edu), Jun Hong (hongjun9@msu.edu), Emerson Cruz (efcruz@msu.edu).

Exam Information

For each exam, each student should bring a picture ID, two #2 pencils, an eraser, a calculator with fresh batteries. (Graphing calculators are allowed, but not necessary.)

Midterm #1: Sep 28, Tuesday: 5:10-6:10 PM, BCH 101 (Biochemistry).
Midterm #2: Oct 26, Tuesday: 5:10-6:10 PM, FAE 116 (Farrall Agr Eng Hall)
Midterm #3: Nov 23, Tuesday: 5:10-6:10 PM, BCH 101 (Biochemistry).
Final exam: Dec 15, Wednesday, 5:45-7:45 PM, BPS 1410 (Biomedical Physical Sci.)

On the midterm exams a one-sided handwritten help sheet is allowed together with the sheets from the previous midterm exams. On the final exam the three one-sided help sheets from the midterms together with a fourth one-sided sheet are allowed. These can all fit on two pieces of paper.

Grading Information

Percent weights for PHY 231C:
Homework: 17%.
Three midterm exams: 3 x 17% = 51%.
Final exam: 34%.

These weights add up to 102%.

Homework: Every homework question is worth 1 point.

Midterm exams: Maximum score on each midterm: 50 points. The midterm exams will have correction exams as a homework. 30% of the positive difference between the correction exam and the in-class exam will be added to your in-class exam score as bonus.

Final Exam: Maximum score on the final: 100 points. The final exam will not have correction.
