Course Description

Physics 231/231C is an algebra-based general physics class, recommended for a variety of majors. Topics include: kinematics, Newton's laws of motion, momentum and energy conservation, circular motion, gravitation, rotational motion, thermodynamics, oscillations, waves, sound.

Prerequisites

MTH 103 or MTH 116 or MTH 124 or MTH 132 or LBS 117.

Class Hours

Room 1410 BPS, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
PHY 231, section 001: 10:20-11:40 AM.
PHY 231, section 002: 6:10-7:30 PM.
PHY 231C, sections 730 and 731: no lectures.

Helproom Hours

BPS 1248, Strosacker Learning Center.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM.

Project Information

For the Honor Option students can work in the help room for 2 hours each week helping their classmates with their homework. A 3.5 or a 4.0 final grade must be also achieved in the class.

Exam Information

Midterm #1: Feb 10, Tu; sec 001: 10:20 AM, BPS 1410; sec 002, 730, 731: 6:10 PM, ANH 1281.
Midterm #2: Mar 17, Tu; sec 001: 10:20 AM, BPS 1410; sec 002, 730, 731: 6:10 PM, ANH 1281.
Midterm #3: Apr 14, Tu; sec 001: 10:20 AM, BPS 1410; sec 002, 730, 731: 6:10 PM, ANH 1281.

Final exam: May 07, Thursday, 8:00-10:00 PM, BCC N100 and N130.

On the midterm exams a one-sided handwritten help sheet is allowed together with the sheets from the previous midterm exams. On the final exam the three one-sided help sheets from the midterms together with a fourth one-sided sheet are allowed. These can all fit on two pieces of paper.

Grading Information

Percent weights for PHY 231 (lecture students in sections 001 and 002):
Clicker questions: 6%.
Homework: 16%.
Three midterm exams: 3 x 16% = 48%.
Final exam: 32%.

Percent weights for PHY 231C (online students in sections: 730 and 731):
Homework: 17%.
Three midterm exams: 3 x 17% = 51%.
Final exam: 34%.
(The online students don't have clicker questions.)

The weights for both 231 and 231C add up to 102%.

Clicker questions: Correct answer: 3 points. Incorrect answer: 1 point. Not present: zero point.

Homework: Every homework question is worth 1 point.

Midterm exams: Maximum score on each midterm: 50 points. The midterm exams will have correction exams as a homework. 30% of the positive difference between the correction exam and the in-class exam will be added to your in-class exam score as bonus.

Final Exam: Maximum score on the final: 100 points. The final exam will not have correction.

Grading scale:
4.0 >= 92%,
3.5 >= 84%,
3.0 >= 76%,
2.5 >= 68%,
2.0 >= 60%,
1.5 >= 52%,
1.0 >= 44%,
0.0 < 44%.

This grading scale might be lowered, but it will not be raised.

Textbook

Knight, Jones, Field: College Physics (A Strategic Approach), Volume 1. (ISBN 0-8053-0629-3). If the book came with the Mastering Physics access kit, don't open the kit. We will use the LON-CAPA course system instead.

The lecture students (sec 001 and 002) will need an i-clicker.

The online students (sec 730 and 731) don't need to buy the clicker.
