Course Description

PHY 183B: on-line calculus-based physics course, for students majoring in engineering or physical sciences. Topics include: one and two dimensional kinematics, dynamics, work, energy, power, conservation of energy, linear momentum, conservation of momentum, system of particles, circular motion, rotational motion, static equilibrium, gravity, solids and fluids, harmonic oscillations, mechanical waves and sound.

Prerequisites

Calculus I: MTH 132 or MTH 152H or LBS 118.

Project Information

Honors option is not available for PHY 183B or for PHY 233B.

Exam Information

Exam #1: June 21, Monday, 60 minutes, online, after 6:00 PM EDT.
Exam #2: July 19, Monday, 60 minutes, online, after 6:00 PM EDT.
Final Exam: August 16, Monday, 120 minutes online, after 6:00 PM EDT.

The maximum possible score on a midterm exam is 50 points, and the maximum score on the final exam is 100 points. A one-sided, hand-written, 8.5 by 11 inch US letter sized help sheet is allowed on each midterm plus the help sheet(s) from the previous midterm(s). On the final exam you are allowed to use three help sheets. The midterm exams will have corrections: 30% of the positive difference between the correction and the exam will be added to your exam score as a bonus. The corrections are optional. The corrections can only raise your scores, they CANNOT lower your score. The exam and the correction scores are combined together to the Total Test score as follows: If C>X, then T = X + 0.3*(C-X), otherwise T = X, where X is the exam score and C is the correction score. The final exam will not have correction.

For the exams you will need a scientific calculator with fresh batteries, two or three sharp #2 (HB) pencils, an eraser and your picture ID (MSU student ID or driver's license). Graphing calculators are allowed, but not required.

All the students will take the exams online through LON-CAPA. The online exams will be proctored through the web by Examity (www.examity.com). The proctoring fee will be covered by MSU. For web proctoring you will need a modern computer with web camera, microphone, speakers and a reliable high speed internet connection.

Grading Information

Percentage weights:
PHY 184B: Pre- and Post-Test: 1%+1%, Homework: 36%, Midterm Exams: 2 x 18% = 36%, Final Exam: 26%, Total: 100%.
PHY 234B: Pre- and Post-Test: 1%+1%, Homework: 36%, Midterm Exams: 2 x 31% = 62%, NO Final Exam, Total: 100%.

Grading scale:
4.0 >= 92%,
3.5 >= 84%,
3.0 >= 76%,
2.5 >= 68%,
2.0 >= 60%,
1.5 >= 52%,
1.0 >= 44%,
0.0 < 44%.

This grading scale might be lowered, but it will NOT be raised.

Textbook

Recommended text book: Wolfgang Bauer, Gary D. Westfall: University Physics with Modern Physics, Volume 1, McGraw-Hill. (Either the 2nd or the 1st edition will be fine. 2nd edition: ISBN 10: 0-0774-0963-9 ISBN 13: 978-0077409630, 1st edition: ISBN 10: 0-0773-5483-4 ISBN 13: 978-0077354831.)

Any other calculus based physics text book will work fine, for example: Randall D. Knight, Halliday-Resnick-Walker, Fishbane-Gasiorowicz-Thornton, Young-Freedman (formerly Sears and Zemansky), Giambattista-Richardson-Richardson.

We will use LON-CAPA, MSU's own free and flexible web-based course management system. If your book has a course management system bundled with, don't open it and don't try to access it, because we will not use it.
