Starch Storage in the Chloroplasts of Pellionia (Urticaceae)

Most of the chloroplast's volume is filled by starch. This is an exceptional state. Usually the assimilation starch that is produced for the time being is broken down again and transported out of the chloroplast in the form of sugar (photos by W. KASPRIK).
