Patterns of Variegation Produced by Different Genetic Causes

Periclinal and sectorial chimeras. The visible patterns are controlled by stable genes that are located in the nucleus. In numerous cases, the cells of the different areas differ also in their degree of ploidy. The patterns in the shown examples are caused by different developmental programs of the respective species. Example: petunia.

Tulipa gesneriana. The rippled look of the tulip flowers is caused by a virus infection.

Coleus. Different patterns of variegation.

Philodendron, spots on the leaves. Gloxinia. Flower with regular pattern

Ficus benjamini
