The table shows all 64 codons and their respective amino acids. The numbers 1, 2 and 3 name the position of the nucleotide within the codon, for example 1 = A, 2 = C, 3 = A is ACA = Thr. Three of the codons 'amber', 'ochre' and 'opal' signal a chain termination. A further one, AUG encodes both Met and the beginning of a chain. The hydrophobic amino acids are in the top left corner, the hydrophilic in the left at the bottom.
