General notes about exam #4 and Final
(we can not change the time and date of this exam, per the registrar)EXAM ROOM ASSIGNMENTS
- Exam #4 will cover all material after Exam #3, and will be based on questions from the Campbell CD ROM and Biology Place. Because we're dropping the lowest score from the first four exams, you don't have to take Exam #4 if you did as well as you want to in those exams (like an A in the first three).
- The cumulative part of the final exam is mandatory (score will not be dropped) and will consist of 50 questions covering the material that was tested on exams 1-4, with approximately 12-13 questions from each of those exams. In many cases, questions and/or figures will be revised at least slightly, although the topics covered by exam questions will be the same. It will not help you simply to memorize answers to past questions -- rather, you should seek to understand the logic and the concepts being tested. The best way to prepare for this cumulative exam is to review all your previous exams thoroughly, so that you understand in each case what the question was asking and why the correct answer was appropriate.
- You will have 2 hours to complete both exams, but can do them in any order and finish early if you want to.
- bring two #2 pencils .
- Exam starts promptly at 8 a.m. and ends promptly at 10 a.m.
- Please sit in alternating seats, using aisle seat, 3rd seat in, 5th seat in, etc., but not 2nd seat, 4th seat, etc.
- You may bring a calculator, but it is not expected that you will need it.

Hurricane Floyd
The Chancellor cancelled classes that start after 4 p.m. on Thursday 9/16, but left the fate of classes with earlier start times that extended beyond 4 p.m. to instructor discretion. After consulting with instructors and representative students, we decided not to cancel the 2:30 p.m. lab section in Biology 107. As of now (3 p.m. on 9/16) we expect classes will be held as scheduled on Friday, 9/17.Sept. 16, 1999
Password protected systems
Certain of my course materials need to be protected by a password. These include:I have chosen a class password that is easy to remember, and will post it in class today. When you see a dialog box, enter the word "student" as your userID and the password. You only need to do this once per computer session; repeat visits to password protected sites do not need a gate. If you forget this password, or missed class, ask me at a subsequent class or e-mail me.
- figures and animations that are copyright protected and licensed for use only to registered students
- grades (which I will post on our class web site and update as needed)
Please note that this class password is entirely different from your Biology Place account. Each of you will have a unique ID and password at The Biology Place . If you bought a new copy of Campbell 5th Ed., an access code is located just after the book front page; use this to set your own ID and password. If you did not purchase a new text, you can obtain a Biology Place account for e months for only $10 -- go to the subscription section and follow the forms. If you do not have a credit card, you will have the option to print out a form and mail it in with your check.

Feedback needed: would you prefer taking this lecture course over the Web rather than in person?
I'm on a committee that is developing policies for UConn's future uses of distance education . Among our questions is: "To what extent would our current students prefer the option to take some of their classes on-line?"I would appreciate any feedback you can provide, especially if you are in a situation where you would find definite advantages to on-line. Imagine that an on-line student would see the same lecture notes and web resources, probably have access to at least the audio content of lectures, weekly assignments to complete and some sort of on-line class dialogue to contribute to. You could do the work at any time convenient to you, and you would have to have access to an internet-linked computer. You would still have to attend a weekly lab, which could be scheduled one evenining a week.
Let me know if such an arrangement would be preferable to you, and if so, why . Send replies to terry@uconnvm.uconn.edu . Thanks for all responses.

Can I overenroll? Can I switch to a different lab section?
Unfortunately, no . Lab sections and lecture hall are filled to capacity (actually, lecture hall is slightly overfilled ) We are adding an extra lecture section and extra lab sections next spring to handle the demand. Note that Bio 108 and 107 can be taken in either order .

Volunteers wanted for Student Management Team
If you're interested in helping to contribute to the success of this class in the following ways:then I invite you apply for one of 5 positions as student team manager for this class. Please send me an e-mail , including:
- meeting for 10-15 minutes after each Friday lecture (~ 9:55 - 10:10 a.m.)
- acting as a representative for other students in the class, so the instructor is quickly and well informed about any problems, difficulties, or sources of confusion that you or other students experience
- assisting the instructor when handouts need to be distributed or forms collected
- taking turns cleaning the board after class, so the instructor can efficiently deal with students that have questions
I will select the team to best reflect the diversity and composition of the class. Thank you for applying, and my apologies in advance to those of you I cannot fit onto the team in case I have more applicants than spaces!
- your name, intended major, and class standing (freshman, sophomore, etc.)
- your gender if it is not obvious from your name (I hope I will have both males and females on the team -- sometimes I can't tell from name alone where you belong!)
- whether you represent any special interest group (commuter, older returning student, working 20+ hours/week, etc.) -- I like my student management teams to reflect the diversity of the class
- a short paragraph explaining why you are interested in being on this team
