James (Jim) Thompson was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended a local high school and earned his B. S. in biology at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Afterwards, he attended Southern Illinois University to earn his M. S. under the guidance of Dr. Barbara Crandall-Stotler and Raymond Stotler in the Department of Plant Biology. His masters research, funded in part by PEET grant (DEB-9521883) from the National Science Foundation, dealt with a systematic problem in the hornworts, Division Anthocerotophyta and he is currently beginning work on his Ph. D. with B. Crandall-Stotler and R. Stotler.
