Wisconsin
Fast Plants Kits are only available through
Carolina Biological Supply Company.
Wisconsin Fast PlantsTM
Kits are designed for use by up to 32 students (working in pairs).
Students kits are designed for classroom demonstrations, or for use by up
to six students (great for home schooling or science projects).
Each Classroom and Student
Kit contains everything you will need to complete the activities,
including seed, an automatic watering system, plant units (quads or pots),
pollination materials, plant stakes, pot labels, fertilizer, activities,
and Growing Instructions.
Wisconsin Fast PlantsTM
materials are teacher friendly. The automatic watering system provides
sufficient water to last for three to four days, and the slow-release
fertilizer is only applied once, at planting. Many of the Classroom Kit
Refills contain the expendable portions and include seed, pollination
materials, stakes, labels, chemicals, fertilizer, and instructions.
NOTE: Proper lighting is
essential for success with Brassica rapa; plans for a light bank are
included in the Growing Instructions, or appropriate lighting systems may
be purchased.

Monohybrid Genetics Kit
Students explore Mendelian
genetics through growing and pollinating F1 hybrid plants to produce F2
seed. Analysis of inheritance is based on the segregation of one gene in
the F2 generation. The experiment illustrates the principles of
inheritance of unit characters, dominance, and segregation. Includes seed
of basic Brassica rapa, seed of a parent with the recessive mutant
anthocyaninless, and F1 seed from a cross of the parent strains (anl/ANL).
Experiment time is 55 days.

in the F2 generation. The experiment illustrates independent assortment,
in addition to other principles of Mendelian genetics. Includes seed of
basic Brassica rapa, seed of a strain that express two recessive mutants
anthocyaninless and yellow-green, and F1 seed from a cross of the parent
strains (anl/ANL, YGR/ygr). Experiment time is 55 days.

Non-inheritance of Acquired
Characteristics Kit
Students treat the rosette
mutation plants with gibberillic acid and observe the resulting elongation
of the rosette plant to a normal height or appearance. However, the
ability to elongate is not inherited and the progeny retain the rosette
mutation. Includes basic Brassica rapa (control) seed, rosette seed, and
gibberellic acid. Experiment time is 55 days.

Cytoplasmic Inheritance Kit
Students investigate
maternal inheritance by crossing wild-type green plants with variegated
plants and growing the progeny to observe the phenotypes. The variegated
trait is carried in the chloroplasts. Contains basic Brassica rapa seeds
and seed of a variegated variety of Brassica rapa (Var). Experiment time
is 55 days.

and College Study the genetics of an easily scored quantitative trait.
Designed for 24 students working in groups of 3, this kit includes 50 seed
each of 2 parental types (hairy and hairless), 100 F1 seed (hairy x
hairless), and 250 F2 seed. By simultaneously growing the parental, F1 and
F2 generations, students can study and measure quantitative variation,
gene action, heretability, correlated traits, and more. Includes 4
watering systems and all other planting materials, plus detailed
instructions. Experiment time is 55 to 100 days, and can be continued
indefinitely for long-term selection studies.

Wisconsin Fast Plants
"Confetti Kit"
Grade 3 and up. Your
students will learn to observe, describe, and form hypotheses in this
funfilled, hands-on science kit. Our "confetti" mix of 8 or more
different types of Wisconsin Fast Plants seed produces plants varying in
height, color, and hairiness. Students measure, graph, name, and describe
their own unique plants. Sturdy 11/2 x 2 inch plastic pots allow each
student (or pair of students) to "own" a confetti garden or 2-3
plants. Kit includes detailed growing instructions, age-appropriate
activities, and student worksheets. A lighting system is not included. For
students working alone or 30 students working in pairs.

Pressing Matters
Grades 2-6. Press and
laminate Wisconsin Fast Plants or other small plants. Mounted plants can
be used in research presentations, photocopied, measured, and even used as
bookmarks! Kit includes supplies to assemble 10 miniature plant presses,
laminating materials, and instructions. Plants not included.
BA-15-8972
Population Explosion Kit
Grades 4-6. What are the
factors that limit and sustain populations? Use Wisconsin Fast Plants
materials to explore the 2 experimental variables, plant population
density, and nutrient levels, on growth, development, and reproduction.
This highly visual hands-on activity illustrates a variety of
environmental, ecological and evolutionary concepts. The Demonstration Kit
includes seed and planting supplies for a 4 x 4 grid of successive
doublings of seed and nutrient levels. The Classroom Kit includes seed and
planting materials for 5 teams of students. When class results are
combined, a 5 x 5 grid of increasing plant population density and nutrient
levels will result. Experiment time is 18 days, 45 if seed is harvested.

Trial-Sized Get Acquainted Kit
Get acquainted with out
unique Wisconsin Fast PlantsTM teaching system with this economical,
trial-sized kit. The kit provides you with the opportunity of observing
the life cycle yourself, before introducing your students to Wisconsin
Fast PlantsTM materials. Shortly after planting a quad (a 4-cell unit) of
seed, you'll see the seedlings emerge and begin to develop. Then, after
pollinating the flowers, you'll watch as the seed pods begin to form.
Our Get Acquainted Kit
contains everything you need: seed, soil, fertilizer, wicks, miniature
watering system, pollination supplies, stakes, labels, plus our complete
Growing Instructions booklet.
Please keep in mind that
proper lighting is essential for success with Rbr plants. The
minimum light requirement for this 1-quad kit is 24 hr, cool white
fluorescent light, placed within several centimeters of the growing tips.
(A height-adjustable 2-bulb fluorescent desk lamp may provide adequate,
but not ideal, lighting.)
BA-15-8690
