N is present in the air as free nitrogen (N2) but most plants cannot absorb it directly in this form. (Only plants that have developed symbiotic associations with nitrogen fixing bacteria can do this.) Most plants get their nitrogen from the soil as nitrate (NO3-) or ammonia (NH4+). |
