Amyloplasts (also called"statoliths" in this context) are heavy because they contain starch so they tend to settle to the bottom of the cell; somehow this stimulates the growth response towards gravity (roots) or away from it (shoots) or for that matter at right angles to it.


When plants grow towards the light they often respond most strongly to:
