The pericycle retains meristematic potential. This is where branch roots arise and much of the secondary growth leading to a woody root.

We see a series of concentric rings in a woody stem because:

• of the seasonal activity of the vascular cambium
• new vascular cambium is formed every year
• there are alternating rings of xylem and phloem
