Thorne treats the flowering plants at the rank of Class with an initial bifurcation into two Subclasses. Related Orders are placed within each Subclass as Superorders (numerically sequenced on this page) and, within these, clusters of related families are grouped into Suborders (listed here on the Superorder pages). This publication provides more detailed classification (subfamilies, tribes) for larger families. It is also rich in information regarding relative diversity (Genus/Species counts with statistical summaries for higher ranks) and detailed, often quantitative information on geographic distribution of flowering plant Families and higher-level taxa.

Using this system, internet information for a given Family can be obtained by browsing its Superorder page (listed above) or, if this is unknown, by using the Family finder, which provides alphabetical selection of the Family name and information, if a flowering plant Family, on placement in the Thorne or Cronquist classification systems. Selection of a family name will initiate a query that returns web-based information (URLs) for the Family.
