Instructions for name searches

You may perform a search by entering values in one or more of the three selection criteria: Name, Distribution and Threat category. Note: searches using multiple criteria will be slower than searches using a single criterion.

• In the Name box enter one or more words from the scientific, family or common name (excluding authorities or cultivar indicators eg. 'cv').

  Entries can be either upper case or lower case.

  Partial word searches:
  Either * or ] can be used as wildcard characters at the end of any search values.
  For example to search for all values starting with Gent, enter

  	gent*   or   gent]

  Multiple search values:
  Separate multiple search values within each criterion with a comma. For example to lookup Gentiana acaulis L., enter:

  	gentiana acaulis

  To look up both Gentiana acaulis L. and Rhododendron lepidotum Wall. ex G.Don, enter:

  	gentiana acaulis, rhododendron lepidotum

  
  Accented characters:
  Do not attempt to use accented characters when searching by common name or by country. For example instead of entering "México" enter "Mexico".

  ---

• In the Distribution box enter one or more words from the name (not the 2-letter code) of the country using the same rules as above. For example, to search for plants in both Honduras and Costa Rica enter.

• Use the Threat category check boxes to restrict your search to only those categories that are checked. Select no check boxes to see taxa from all categories.

  Examples

  To search for all possibly extinct plants check the Possibly extinct box under Threat category, leaving the Name and Distribution blank.

  To search for all possibly extinct plants in Costa Rica, check the Possibly extinct Threat category, enter Costa Rica in Distribution and leave Name blank.

  To search for all possibly extinct orchids in Costa Rica, check the Possibly extinct box under Threat category, enter Costa Rica in Distribution and enter Orchidaceae in Name. (Note: in order to ensure that you find ALL the orchids you shoud enter Orchidaceae and not orchid, which is used as a common name for some, but not all, orchid records)
