The virtual cotton model can keep track of information for each plant part on how its internal state varies with age and position in the plant. In this simple hypothetical example, leaves which are between 4 and 6 days old are assumed to have resistance to pests and are shown as blue. The simulation shows which parts of the plant are protected and the percentage for the whole plant. This information could be integrated with other spatial data, such as where on plants pests are most active and where most pesticide droplets land, so that potential gaps in defences against pests could be identified.
