Insect damage to a plant can induce the production of defensive chemicals by the plant. This schematic model illustrates how location of damage can have an effect on the proportion of a plant that is defended, In both simulations the range of the internal message and the duration of the defense is the same, but the location of the initial damage differs. The damaged leaf is coloured red, the signal travelling through the plant is blue, and the leaves with induced defenses are coloured purple.
