Various planting densities and amounts of variation in plant spacing, germination time etc. can be simulated by the virtual cotton model. This image shows a 3 row x 2 metre stand of plants in the early squaring phase. It was planted at an average of 5 plants per metre with very little variation in plant spacing. Though simulated root growth is not shown, it can be made responsive to soil water profiles which depend on soil type, furrow spacing and ridge height.
