LON-CAPA Feed "Course Announcements" for PHY 234B Fall 2018
- PHY234B, Fall 2018
Dear Student of PHY 234B - Fall 2018,
welcome to the course! The class will start on the morning of Wednesday,
August 29th. You didn't miss anything yet.
We will use LON-CAPA, MSU's own free and flexible web-based course management
system. Please visit www.loncapa.msu.edu on the net and log in using your MSU
NetID and password. Select the class. Find and read the syllabus. This is the
official syllabus of the class.
We will have ten homework sets and three midterm exams in this class. The
midterm exams will have corrections associated with them. We will NOT have a
final exam in this class. The dates and times of the exams are in the syllabus.
You are encouraged to come to the help room with your questions. Our Teaching
Assistant will be more than happy to answer your questions. The help room
schedule will be in the syllabus soon. I will inform you of his name once I have it.
You are also encouraged to use the discussion board inside LON-CAPA. If you
don't understand a problem, or you need help, just click on the "Post
Discussion" link, and post your question. If you know the answer to somebody
else's question, just post your answer. Don't forget: The best way to learn
is to teach. (Doscendo discimus.) When you post a message you can do it with
your name, or you can do it anonymously.
The recommended textbook is: Wolfgang Bauer, Gary D Westfall: University
Physics with Modern Physics, Volume 1, McGraw-Hill. (Either the 2nd or
the 1st edition will be fine. 2nd edition: ISBN 10: 0-0774-0963-9 ISBN
13: 978-0077409630 1st edition: ISBN 10: 0-0773-5483-4 ISBN 13:
978-0077354831.) However, any other calculus based physics text book
will work fine, for example Randall D. Knight, Halliday-Resnick-Walker,
Giambattista-Richardson-Richardson.
Inside the "Online Lectures" folder in LON-CAPA you will find lecture
videos in Flash format. Click on them, and make sure your computer
plays them correctly. These are narrated PowerPoint slides. The slides
were written by the authors of the text book, and narrated by another
instructor, Richard Hallstein.
You can also find a set of slides on the www.pa.msu.edu/~nagy_t/ page
under the "Notes" link. They are handwritten lecture slides prepared by the
previous lecturer of the course, Tibor Nagy - thanks Tibor for allowing us
to continue to use them! With all these resources you will be in very
good shape for your studies.
As Homework #0 you will find a folder with some simple problems in it.
You can solve these problems without any reading or studying of the textbook.
The purpose of these problems is to make sure you know how to enter numbers
and units as your answer in case you didn't use LON-CAPA before.
Good luck in PHY234B!
