Liberty
Hyde Bailey,
was born in South Haven, Michigan on March 15, 1858. He graduated
from Michigan State Agricultural College. Later he studied under the
Harvard botanist Asa Gray. Following graduation, he worked at Cornell
University, where he was a professor and later dean of the College of
Agriculture. During his life time he brought botanists, geneticists,
and plant pathologists together to form the field of horticulture.
He established the Bailey Hortorium, which is still a plant research institute. In his career he published more than 700 scientific papers and 66 books, including The Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
Bailey died on December 15, 1954.
