Guion Steward BlufordGuion Steward Bluford, was born in 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Pennsylvania State University in 1964. From there he entered the United States Air Force and served as a pilot during the Vietnam conflict.

 

He earned his doctorate in aerospace engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1979. After that he was selected as an astronaut trainee. In August, 1983 Bluford became the first black America astronaut to fly in space.

 

He flew as a mission specialist on the Challenger space craft.
