Animal remains

The Rhynie Chert contains remains of spiders, mites, millipedes and collembolans. These animals are among the first land inhabitants.

From my four pieces of Rhynie Chert only two thin sections contained animal remains. These are probably parts of the legs of an arachnid. These animals are rather common in the Rhynie Chert. The 'spines' are the hairs on the leg.

On the next page you may find photos of animal remains from slides made by Hans de Kruijk from Rhynie Chert from the University of Manchester.
