AskERIC AskERIC is the Internet-based education information service of the federally-funded national information ERIC System, headquartered at the ERIC Clearinghouse on Information & Technology at Syracuse University. Alwynne B. Beaudoin, Provincial Museum of Alberta, Edmonton: A Dictionary of Quaternary Acronyms and Abbreviations. This dictionary consists of acronyms and abbreviations in Quaternary studies, including societies and technique abbreviations and "terms in common use".

Institute for Chemistry, Freie Universität Berlin: Acronyms and Abbreviations. This data base, consisting of more than 12.000 acronyms, has a bias towards acronyms used in chemistry or spectroscopy. The special data base of abbreviations of chemical compound names has been incorporated into the acronym database.

Britannica Online: Limited Search. Britannica Sample Search allows you to search the entire database of Britannica Online and review search results (article or section titles).

CambridgeSoft Corporation (formerly Cambridge Scientific Computing): ChemFinder A WWW-based chemical search engine. Fill in any of the fields that you want to search over, ChemFinder will locate any compounds that match all of the criteria you specified. Excellent!

CIA: The World Factbook. The World Factbook is a comprehensive view of each country in the world through facts and statistics on such topics as population, economy and government. The book also includes maps and flags for each country.

Encarta Online. Online light version of Microsoft´s popular CD-ROM. Go to "find in concise".

Encyclopedia.com: The internet´s premiere free encyclopedia! More than 17,000 articles from "The Concise Columbia Electronic Encyclpedia", Third Edition.

FOCUS: Online-Nachschlagewerke. An index of web-dictionaries, in German.

Freeality Internet Search: Online Encyclopedias. All in one page.

GEOnet Names Server (GNS): GNS provides access to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency´s (NIMA) database of foreign geographic feature names. Approximately 12,000 of the databases 3.3 million features are updated monthly with names information approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (US BGN).

GISC - Great Innovation Systems Co., Ltd, Korea: Dictionaries and Unit conversion for Engineers. All in one page.

! Harcourt Inc. and Academic Press: Dictionary of Science and Technology. The dictionary consists of 2,464 pages and contains a total of 133,007 entries (in 130 fields of science), making it the largest scientific dictionary ever compiled in the English language. Browse the Scientific Fields Covered by the Dictionary, or search for Paleontology, Evolution, Botany, Life Science, Biology, and Ecology. Excellent!

Science Terms: Distinctions, Restrictions, and Confusions. A discussion of familiar words that have specific or specialized meanings in science and scientific terms that are easy to confuse.

Elizabeth Keller, Extreme Science: Coldest, Highest, Fastest on Earth. Facts about extremes in physical geography, climate, and animal biology. With links to external sites, and excellent text that provides in-depth information.

Burkhard Kirste, Department of Chemistry, FU Berlin: Conversion of Units (Including currency conversion and conversion of temperatures). Links worth checking out: General chemistry. Physical quantities, constants, units.

Projekt Deutscher Wortschatz, Institut für Informatik, Universität Leipzig: Wortschatz-Lexikon. This database might be used as a special type of German dictionary and dictionary of accompanied expressions. It includes more than 5 million words and numerous sentences as examples. In German.

LEO: English/German Dictionary. This dictionary contains more than 170.000 entries.

! Merriam-Webster Online. A dictionary and thesaurus. You can hear the pronunciations in this on-line dictionary. Excellent!

! OneLook Dictionaries. You may search all or a few of the dictionaries and then quickly retrieve the definitions found. An asterisk character in a search string is a wildcard that matches any number (including zero) of any characters. Excellent!

Cathy D. Stewart, Steelynx; Technical Center, National Steel, USA: Online Scientific Reference Data. A list of scientific dictionaries and encyclopedias.

Swain Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Library, Stanford University Libraries, CA: BEILSTEIN Dictionary German - English, English - German. This online dictionary, actually intented for users of the Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry, contains most German words occurring in the Beilstein Handbook, as well as common abbreviations, alphabetically listed with their English equivalents (about 2,100 entries). Umlauts are not included in this computer version of the dictionary. Excellent!

Frank Tapson, Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching, University of Exeter: A Dictionary of Units. This page provides a summary of most of the units of measurement to be found in use around the world today, together with the appropriate conversion factors needed to change them into a "standard" unit of the Systeme International.
