        Search the database

The 1997 IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants was published as a book in 1998 by IUCN, as part of IUCN/SSC's red list programme. The searchable database provided here was developed by WCMC, in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. This database makes available 35,319 records from the WCMC Threatened Plants Database of plants that are recorded as globally threatened. In addition to information published in the book, WCMC has included information on common names1 and synonymy2.

The WCMC Threatened Plants Database contains information on over 136,000 plant taxa of conservation importance based on 19,000 data sources. Data presented here includes major contributions from the Association for Biodiversity Information, National Botanical Institute, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, IUCN's Species Survival Commission, Smithsonian Institution, The Nature Conservancy, The New York Botanical Garden and Wildlife Australia.

The interactive subset of data presented here gives you the
opportunity to add comments on any taxon or conservation
assessment as part of the continual process of updating this service.

1 Relatively few common names are available in this dataset, but they do appear in several languages. Not all taxa have common names.
2 A partial synonymy is available in this database. Only the synonymy required to fully represent the data supplied by WCMC's sources is shown here.
3 For some countries data are stored at the sub-national level (for instance Australia, China, USA etc). For a full list of sub-national areas for which data are available click here.
